Support for Pelvic Organ Prolapse
– Including Pessary Fitting

Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when the bladder, bowel, uterus, or vaginal walls shift out of their usual position and press into the vaginal space. It’s common—especially after childbirth or during menopause—and can lead to symptoms like heaviness, dragging, bulging, or pressure in the pelvic area.

While prolapse can feel concerning, there are effective, non-surgical treatment options available. One of these is the use of a vaginal pessary.

How Can Physiotherapy Help?

As pelvic health physiotherapists, we can:

  • Assess and confirm whether pessary use may be appropriate

  • Fit and trial different pessary options

  • Teach you how to safely remove, insert, and care for your pessary

  • Provide ongoing support and monitoring to ensure comfort and effectiveness

  • Combine pessary use with pelvic floor muscle rehabilitation for long-term outcomes

Many women find pessaries a helpful alternative or complement to surgery, and they can offer relief from symptoms while allowing you to stay active and comfortable in daily life.

Your care is always guided by your goals and preferences
—and we’ll work with you every step of the way to find the best solution.

What is a Pessary?

A pessary is a small, medical-grade silicone device that is inserted into the vagina to support the pelvic organs and help manage symptoms of prolapse. There are many shapes and sizes available, and the right one for you will depend on your individual anatomy, prolapse type, and lifestyle.
